About Journey
As we look ahead to 2012 in Art Education, we should first stop to appreciate how far we have come in this journey to new relevance and presence. Art Education aims to connect us in our way of thinking, making our thought processes visible to publish, share its content and weave more meaningful relationships from learning about the past to create the present.
Visual art makes the excellent tool for not only teaching specific skills but also for fostering individuality through thinking and development. When students look at a piece of art, they will have questions. By introducing art masterpieces to children, we can stir their curiosity and help them develop inquisitive minds. The answers to their questions can mostly be found in the historical background of the art works. By closely relating themes and styles of art to the times and culture in which the artists lived, students will know not only know more about history, but art will come alive for them.
But just because we have access to such a platform in Art Education, it does not necessary entitle students able to reach out their journey to the people around them. In other words, the opportunity to participate and engage is a privilege. And, this privilege is rewarded with a community to realize that the way to engage is to value.
Let this exhibition brings you on a journey where works of art are created in an attempt to understand the visual art world and engage these understandings with the experiences in today’s context around these students.
This exhibition has been jointly organized by Singapore National Library Board and a group of teacher-curators from Singapore.
